Setting Up Your Work at Home Office

One of the keys to having a successful work at home career is setting up a workable and likable work at home office. Creating a work at home office that is not only functional but at the same time is enjoyable and comfortable could make a major difference in how your days play out.

The first major decision is choosing your work at home office location. For some, the choices may be limited because of simple lack of extra space. Remember, that the most important factor in choosing your work area is finding a place you generally like. Whether it's a pre-existing office or the corner of a spare bedroom, if you feel good and are comfortable in your home office getaway then you have already achieved a major hurdle.

There are several other factors to consider in addition to just liking the area when choosing your work at home office space. It is of second most importance that your work at home office is quiet and that you choose an area where you are able to close yourself off and away from distractions. Try situating your work at home office away from bathrooms and utility areas. There is nothing more inconvenient than being on the phone with an important client while the dryer beats up against the adjoining wall.

Having appropriate lighting is also very important, but poor lighting is easily solved with additional lamps. Try locating your work at home office near at least one window. It's proven that direct sunlight helps to inspire and can keep your spirits high.

Make sure that the room is equipped with the correct cable, phone and electrical outlets. Once again, this is not a big deal because you can run extensions, as long as you don't mind cords running along your wall. For a small price you can have additional outlets installed in your work at home office.

When buying your work at home office furniture make sure you spend the majority of your time sitting in the chair that could end up being your resting place for the better part of the day. A happy bottom and back make for a happy worker. When choosing office furniture, I would definitely spend more on a better chair and skimp on a desk. However, when choosing a desk make sure you choose one that has plenty of work space. As for the other accessories, you know what's best for you, trust your opinion. Since you are the one who has to live with the set up, leave your spouse at home. Then again, since you also have to live with your spouse, maybe getting their opinion wouldn't hurt after all!

One last consideration is your paint color. Paint color can have a major influence on productivity. Light, bright colors are the way to go. Stay clear of the dark colors.

Once your work at home office space is set up, you will want to spend the last 10 minutes of your day brainstorming and doing a quick clutter pick up. This is a good way to make sure you clear your mind and start the next day on the right foot. Have fun with your new set up!
