Work From Home: Making a Schedule

Making a schedule seems like a fairly easy task, but for many it can be very overwhelming. Keep in mind that setting up a set schedule will not only make your life more organized and productive, but will also increase the amount of free time you have. By following these simple steps you will be able create a simple schedule that compliments your lifestyle.

Start by making a set of 3 lists. The first list will consist of any activity that you would do on a daily basis. Keep it broad by grouping similar items into the same group. For example, you could put getting dressed, making breakfast, etc. in the same group called "Morning Start Up". Continue to add the rest of the day's activities and group them accordingly. The second list should consist of all the things you do on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis- such as grocery shopping, fueling up the car, mowing the yard., etc. The third list should be any important dates, and these should be included in the note section on the daily schedule. This list would include such things as birthdays, events, TV programs, doctor's appointments, car appointments, playdates and other important appointments. Next, write out the amount of time it normally takes you to do each thing. Then add 10% more time to each thing, which will help since the first amount of time was only an estimate. You can re-adjust your time as you continue your scheduling. You should still add extra time though, because this will help with unexpected slowdowns.

When starting the actual schedule fill out only one week at a time. This allows change, and it will be easier to work in one week's worth of changes than a whole month. Also, filling out the current week's schedule will keep important details fresh in your mind. Take 7 sheets of paper and title each with a date and day of the following week's schedule, starting with the first sheet that begins the first day of your weekly schedule. For example, let's say our week will begin on Monday. Next, write down the hours starting with the hour you wake up and ending with the hour your plan to go to bed. Leave at least 4 spaces/lines in between each hour. Do the same for seven pieces of paper, make sure you adjust times for late nights or early wake ups. Next fill in the activities from the daily list, putting each thing into the appropriate time slots, then fill in the things from the list that you do on a bi-daily, weekly or monthly basis. Note any appointments. Make a note on the bottom of the each page in accordance with an event or birthday. Don't forget to put in free time for yourself.

Just as important as the actual schedule is the schedule's placement. Putting the schedule in a place that is readily available and visible is important. Make sure to make extra copies to keep in different rooms and in the car. Also, make sure to give each member of your family the schedule and ask for their advice on scheduling.

Working from home can be a chore in time management, but preparng, and sticking to, an organized schedule will help to ensure that everything gets done.

Good luck and happy scheduling!
