"I started working from home just over a year ago. I had bought a brand new car right before I left my job in which I was commuting thirty minutes per day, twice a day. That added up to at least 5 hours of commuting per week, in which I was driving close to 300 work related miles per week. That's almost 16000 miles per year. Evaluating the past year has made me realize the huge amount of money and time I am saving by working from home and no longer commuting for my pay.
I figured that averaging out what I would have spent on gas to $2.00 per gallon with my car getting around 24 miles per gallon I saved at least $1333 in gas costs last year. This amount is still probably low, because even though gas is now under $2.00 per gallon, it was hitting between $3.00 and $4.00 per gallon for what seemed like forever. So not only have I saved hundreds of dollars in gas, but I have saved on 5 oil changes and 2 tire rotations, which would add up to $170 from the dealer I would normally take my car to. I know there are cheaper places to go, but this is about what I would actually do, not what would be cheapest. I was also able to decrease my car insurance by $20 per month adding up to a savings of $240 per year. So, just on these figures alone I have saved at least $1743 in one year on car expenses.
$1743 is a nice savings but that doesn't even include the items I couldn't figure into the equation. All the normal wear and tear I am missing out on by having my nice car parked in my driveway. I don't have to worry about all the little dents and cracked windows associated with the highway, like rocks hitting my windshield. Let me just tell you that before I started working from home I had to replace two windows because of road debris thrown from trucks. Also, because I am not driving, I don't have to wash my car as often and the inside of my vehicle doesn't get trashed with as much fast food wrappers or coffee cups as it use to, which is nice. So, by working from home I am saving tons of money on gas, oil changes, tire rotations, normal wear and tear, windshields, car washes and auto insurance. Not to mention the fact that I probably will be able to keep my car running and looking great for many years to come.
As for the amount of time I have saved, lets break it down. By working from home I saved 260 hours of driving time this year. I figured that I stood in line for fast food or coffee an average of 7 minutes per day which adds up to about 30 hours per year. Pumping gas was just 15 minutes per week, but added up to 13 hours per year. Waiting for oil changes and tire rotations just over 5 hours for the year. Extra car washes and vacuuming out the car at 6 hours. Putting this all together I have saved myself 314 hours by working from home this year. That's over 13 days of wasted time if I was still commuting to my old job.
It is amazing how much time and money we spend doing the necessities associated with commuting. Even if you figured my time to be worth only $10 per hour at 314 hours that equals $3140. Add that amount to the $1743 in auto costs and I'm at $4883. Almost $5000 dollars. That's incredible!"
